Wooden toys have been around since ancient times. Back then, toys were made out of natural materials or whatever was on hand. Today, toys are produced by the millions, and 99% are made of plastic and other manmade materials. Many of these toys are made in 3rd world countries and are not always of the best quality. Plastic breaks easily which will not last very long. In recent history, there have been problems with lead and other toxic metals showing up in the paint of these items. Wood is a more Eco-friendly material to use. It is durable and can withstand a fair amount of abuse. Generally regarded as safe, these types of toys, when used age appropriately; will give your child many hours of play.
There are many educational wooden baby toys such as ring stackers, alphabet blocks, counting abacuses, and animal puzzles. Their bright colors and simple designs make it easy to keep a baby's attention and teach him skills in the process.
Toddler boys will enjoy playing with wooden trucks that have moving parts and resemble actual 18- wheelers and tractors. However, trucks are not the only toys that can be produced from wood; there are trains, boats and any other vehicle you can think of. Some of these wooden toys are handcrafted which makes them a little more unique than the assembly line variety. Perhaps, some of these may become collector's items, if they are cared for and kept for a period of time.
Girls will love a wooden toy chest designed to look like a doll house. They can store all their toys, dolls, and doll accessories in one convenient place. Other toys chests can resemble benches or even be personalized with the child's name on it.
