In the early developmental years our toddlers will soak up as much as we can give them. In fact, the first few years during the life of a child will play a significant role in his or her future. We simply cannot allow ourselves to dismiss this time period as menial or routine.
More often then not, when our child approaches us, as busy and tired parents, we may have a tendency to shrug off of our responsibility to teach them and help them develop. In many cases though, our child just wants to play or be entertained. So, instead of plopping them down in front of the television set, why don't you bring out some toys that will both entertain and aid them in their development?
Here are 5 great educational toys for toddlers:
1.) Easel - For the artist in your toddler. Let him or her use an easel and not only will your toddler exercise his artistic side, but he will also be less likely to draw on the walls, counters and clothes.
2.) Blocks / Legos - A crowd favorite for a reason. The only real precaution, other than watching your step, is to keep the little pieces out of their mouths. Depending on your child, it may be best to limit the sets you buy to the larger pieces.
3.) Wooden puzzles- Does it have to be wooden? Of course not, but I can tell you from experience that the wooden puzzles we have are in much better condition than the newer, paper or cardboard puzzles.
4.) Shape sorters - Whether they are the monkey style, pound the square through the right hole or geometric stacker, these teach hand and eye coordination, problem solving and never to be underestimated -- patience!
5.) Musical toys - Naturally, these musical toys are for the days that you do not already have a headache. It really depends on your child's likes/dislikes on whether or not you get a sing-a-long style book or a piano or a guitar. Even if we have no musical talent ourselves, music stimulates the mind and is a very strong contributor in the mental development of our toddlers.
Of course, these are just some education toys for toddlers. There are many more out there that are definitely worth our time. These, to me, are just a handful of the staples.
