Some Facts About Wooden Toys

Wooden toys are one of the easiest but most neglected sources of entertainment for the kids in modern times. Toys are one of the earliest invented objects by humans. In the initial stage, man started developing things out of stone. But as time progressed, he learnt the art of carving things out of wood, either by the help of stone or metal. This was the beginning of the story of wooden toys.

One of the most popular items among these toys is the wooden building blocks. Building blocks are constructive in nature and they help to instill a positive psychology in the kid's mind. There are other types of toys like puzzles and sorting games. All these help in the overall mental development of the kid, which is surely to help him in the future.

Toy trains made of wood have been a popular attraction among kids for many years. These trains, zooming around in the tracks, give the kid, a sense of thrill and excitement. He gets his initial sense of what speed means and the genes of a racer start developing in his cells.

In the world of today, the majority of the kids are hooked to either plastic toys or video games. It cannot be denied that both of these are very attractive and grab the young's attention in no time at all. But, it is a fact that these things are too much artificial to the core and the kids will miss the essence of nature while spending time with these things. Toys give the sense of nature and shape the child's mind accordingly.

Wooden toys are being made in various countries throughout the world. They provide a unique glimpse in the enchanting world of wooden toys.

One of the most famous types of wooden toys from India is the 'Channapatna Toys'. These toys have a long history, dating back to the reign of Tipu Sultan. One of the evidences of the popularity of these toys is the recognition they have received from World Trade Organization (WTO). Toy trains made of wood were being manufactured in the US in the early part of the 20th century.

One of the well-known companies in the 1930s which were making toy trains was the Skaneateles Handicrafters. In Europe, one of the majors in toy making is HABA. It is a German company, producing some of the best toys for the kids and their products can be found in display in any part of the world. These are some of the best wooden toys for the kid that the world has offered till now. There are many others in other companies making quality wooden materials for the kid.

Children's Floor Puzzles - Great For Kids Hand-Eye Coordination

Hand-eye coordination begins during infancy through providing infants with objects and colorful toys that will encourage them to reach out and grasp them. By the age of 4-5 months infants can bring their hands into their field of vision, and during toddlerhood further progress in hand-eye coordination comes with the ability to see and grasp objects accurately. They develop the "pincer grasp" during this time.

By three to four years of age children learn to handle eating utensils and button small buttons. By five years of age the child's hand-eye coordination is beginning to advance as he approaches, grasps and releases objects with precision and accuracy.

By six years of age the child's visual orientation changes as they shift their gaze more frequently and follow the progress of objects rather than staring at the object. By the time they reach school age through middle childhood they make great advances in speed, timing and coordination of hand-eye coordination.

Between the ages of three and six it is important to provide as many opportunities for children to develop their hand-eye coordination. But, what to do when it rains, snows or gets dark too early? Because visual feedback is vital for fast and accurate hand movements it is important to allow children to continue to develop their hand-eye coordination.

One great solution is a giant floor puzzle. These puzzles are very colorful, made of large enough pieces to not harm the child if they put them in their mouth, and provide an opportunity to develop hand-eye coordination while learning shapes and patterns.

Over the years I have cared for many children, and I have observed their behavior with floor puzzles. I take the diagram of the completed puzzle and seal it in plastic so they can refer to it without destroying it. Children will spend a lot of time learning the puzzle, and once they do they always want an adult to watch them and spend time with them putting the puzzle together. When they are older they will only put it together 2 or 3 times before losing interest, but they always go back to it when bored indoors.

Safe and educational, giant floor puzzles make a great indoor activity for when the weather keeps them indoors.

The History of Toddler Toys

We know that Roman and Greek toddlers played with clay rattles, animal skin or animal bladder balls, clay rattles, hand carts, clay dolls, hobby horses, hoops and spinning tops. After toddlers reached the age of 3 they continued to play with these toys, but they where also gradually introduced to using tools and weapons. So from a very early age the toys they used where intended to prepare toddlers for their adult lives.

From the dark to the middle ages knucklebones, barrel hoops, wooden toys like tops, wooden horses and puppets where popular. In this period puritans tended to object to these toys for religious reasons. They felt kids should only play with toys that where based on scripture. A popular toy from the period that puritans liked was a wooden carved ark.

By the 18th century the mass production of toys took hold. Pictorial alphabet cards, books, dissected map puzzles and board games sold well.

By the 19th century the quality of the toys had gone up and the prices had come down. Technical toys like steam engines, building blocks, magic lanterns and optical toys like the kaleidoscope and zoetrope sold well. Many of our current day toy companies started out in the 1890s and 1900s. They produced toy soldiers, zoos, farmyards and later cowboys and Indians and railway figures. When World War 2 broke out toy making came to a standstill. All the toy factories where converted for making weapons. For a while home made toys became popular again.

The most notable thing about toys in the 20th century is the influence of radio TV and popular culture on toys. With prices dropping further toys based on TV heroes where bought all over the world. Buck Rogers, Thomas the Tank Engine and My Little Pony are some famous examples.

Battery powered toys in the 20th century has replaced clockwork toys. However different the toys down the ages may seem, many themes tend to repeat themselves. Toys are still there to develop important skills to comfort and entertain.

Some famous toys from history:

Barbie Dolls - Invented in 1959 by Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel). The toy was named after Ruth's daughter Barbara. The Ken doll was named after her son. Barbie has had some criticism over the years. If she was a real human her proportions would be 36-18-38 which is impossible.

Boomerang - There are 2 kinds of Boomerangs. The kind which just goes where you throw it and the kind that comes back. Heavier forms of these sticks where used in War and for hunting in the Australian outback.

LEGO - Lego is a Danish inventions from Ole Kirk Christiansen and his son Godtfred Kirk two Danish toy makers. They invented LEGO in 1949.

Video Games - The first video game was created by A.S. Douglas in 1952. At the time he held a PhD degree at the University of Cambridge on Human-Computer interaction. His first creation was a version of Tic-Tac-Toe.

Choosing Educational Toys For Children With Learning Disability

Some children must deal with leaning difficulties, or problems with learning new information. They might struggle to master skills like throwing and catching a ball. They might grow confused trying to communicate by talking and listening to other people. Without being able to learn and retain key bits of information, these children struggle even more when they enter school and try to master reading, writing, and other content-area skills and knowledge.

Scientists aren't sure exactly what causes learning difficulties. Many theorize that the brains of children with learning disability mix up signals and have difficulty sending and receiving bits of information. Basically, as University of Nevada-Reno professors Gary Fisher and Rhoda Cummings explain in The Survival Guide for Kids with LD, "some kids just have a hard time learning."
These children are not dumb or lazy at all. They just "learn differently" (LD). Gary Fisher and Rhoda Cummings appropriately substitute the term "disability" in their book, helpful to deal with the problem not with the stigma. Children with LD have normal or even above-average intelligence and may, in fact, excel in other areas. Their brains just acquire, process, and retain information differently. As Stanley S. Lamm, M.D., and Martin L. Fisch, Ph.D. put it in Learning Disabilities Explained, a child with a learning disorder just has "a condition or a series of specific conditions that interfere with the normal learning process."

Children who learn differently can come from any ethnic or socioeconomic group. Although only about 5% of children have been formally diagnosed with an LD, some doctors and educators believe that as many as 20 percent of children have some sort of interference with the way they learn in some area. The good news is that with proper diagnosis and targeted intervention, children with LD can greatly improve their ability to learn in a weak area.

It is paramount especially for parents to recognize that children with LD learn differently and the means and resources that they should make available to help them learn. Once an LD has been identified, a team of professionals test the child and use their findings to develop an individualized education plan (IEP) for him or her. Now the child and his or her teachers and parents know the area in which the child needs extra help and can focus on developing and improving the child's learning skills there. Special classes and one-on-one tutoring can help.

So can using educational toys targeted to develop specific skills. Children who are becoming bored with dry schoolwork may find renewed excitement in learning when that learning comes in the shape of a toy. Simplifying the learning process and using unconventional methods to make learning fun can spur children with LDs to reach new levels of achievement.

Gary Fisher and Rhoda Cummings identify seven key areas in which children might learn differently: talking and listening, reading, writing, math, organizing skills, social skills, and motor skills. Here are some suggestions for toys that develop learning skills associated with each of these areas...
Talking and Listening LD

Children with Talking and Listening LD know what they want to say; they just struggle to communicate their thoughts. They may also have difficulty understanding the meaning of the words other people say to them, sometimes mistaking one meaning for another. Some good skills to foster in this area are critical thinking and the ability to make predictions, understand cause and effect, and draw conclusions. These skills can help children organize their thoughts so as to express them more coherently and to understand better what others are saying to them.
Strategy and logic games such as FoxMind Games' Zoologic or Cliko games can encourage the development of such logical thinking skills. While playing such games, parents can encourage children to think aloud to guide their reasoning. Parents can also gently ask children questions about what they think will happen next in a situation, acknowledging each response and using it as the basis for the next question.

Reading LD
Children with Reading LD may be overwhelmed by being exposed to too much text at a time. They may struggle to read the alphabet or to sound out words. They may skip lines when reading because it looks to them like the words are moving around on the page.
Educational toys such as Melissa and Doug's Opposites Puzzle Cards or the See & Spell break reading down to its essential components. Travel Read Spin and Word Spin Deluxe Family Edition made by GeoSpace are also excellent ways to turn spelling and reading skills into a fun experience. Focusing on one word/concept at a time and breaking words down into letters keeps children from being confused by walls of text. While using such products, encourage children to talk about what they are reading to check comprehension.

Writing LD
Children with Writing LD struggle with many of the same problems as children with Talking and Listening LD. They have great ideas in their heads, but have trouble expressing themselves in writing with neat handwriting and good grammar and spelling. This is a case where the simplest of toys can have the greatest effect. Take some of the pressure of writing off by having children compose their thoughts on a fun chalkboard or dry-erase board. Now children can erase and/or restart their sentences over and over until everything is exactly right.

Math LD
Children with Math LD struggle with what numbers and numerical symbols mean. They have difficulty memorizing and understanding math facts. On the most basic level, they struggle with the patterns that underlie math concepts. Playing with pattern games, shape puzzles, and blocks can give a child the experience and confidence with patterns needed to succeed in math. For example, a toy such as FoxMind Games' Logix I give a child practice with shapes and logic patterns. Again, the Travel Math Spin by GeoSpace is a fun teaching tool for basic operations, taking away what is sometimes a dreadful feeling of a child to have to learn math by him or herself. Remember, adult participation in a family setting using educational games is important in the learning process.

Organizing Skills LD
Children with Organizing Skills LD have trouble keeping track of their materials and assignments. Even keeping their rooms or desks in order can be difficult. Puzzles or other toys with pieces that can only go one way can subtly teach such children habits of organization. An organizer such as Melissa and Doug's Magnetic Responsibility Chart can encourage good habits by helping children keep track of their responsibilities and be rewarded for good habits and behaviors.

Social Skills LD
Children with Social Skills LD have trouble interacting with other people. They misread facial clues and gestures and make expressions and gestures that do not convey what they actually feel. Dramatic role-play games can let children rehearse proper social behaviors in a safe environment from which the stress of real-life consequences has been removed. Dolls and dollhouses, play sets and figurines, and dress-up clothes and props can all be vehicles for imaginative play that practices effective social interaction.

Motor Skills LD
Children with Motor Skills LD struggle with both gross motor skills such as balancing, jumping, or even running and fine motor skills like lacing strings through holes or holding a pencil correctly. Toys like jump ropes, sports equipment, and the Plasma Car can develop gross motor skills. Toys like lacing cards or art sets like Melissa and Doug's Stamp Sets and Bead Set can develop fine motor skills. Some toys, such as building blocks, develop a whole range of motor skills.

All Parents Can Benefit from Investing in Educational Toys
Educational toys can be a valuable resource for kids with and without LD. Children can grow bored with completing worksheets or dry assignments meant to teach content-area knowledge. In particular, children with LD may struggle just to understand how to complete a worksheet. Playing with an educational toy, on the other hand, can encourage children to spend longer (and more enjoyable!) amounts of time practicing and mastering new knowledge and skills. Instead of memorizing dry math information, a child can play with an educational toy and learn first-hand how to use logic and patterns to solve a problem. In fact, any parent wishing to develop his or her child's abilities in one of the above areas could benefit from investing in any of the toys discussed.

5 Great Educational Toys For Toddlers

In the early developmental years our toddlers will soak up as much as we can give them. In fact, the first few years during the life of a child will play a significant role in his or her future. We simply cannot allow ourselves to dismiss this time period as menial or routine.

More often then not, when our child approaches us, as busy and tired parents, we may have a tendency to shrug off of our responsibility to teach them and help them develop. In many cases though, our child just wants to play or be entertained. So, instead of plopping them down in front of the television set, why don't you bring out some toys that will both entertain and aid them in their development?

Here are 5 great educational toys for toddlers:

1.) Easel - For the artist in your toddler. Let him or her use an easel and not only will your toddler exercise his artistic side, but he will also be less likely to draw on the walls, counters and clothes.

2.) Blocks / Legos - A crowd favorite for a reason. The only real precaution, other than watching your step, is to keep the little pieces out of their mouths. Depending on your child, it may be best to limit the sets you buy to the larger pieces.

3.) Wooden puzzles- Does it have to be wooden? Of course not, but I can tell you from experience that the wooden puzzles we have are in much better condition than the newer, paper or cardboard puzzles.

4.) Shape sorters - Whether they are the monkey style, pound the square through the right hole or geometric stacker, these teach hand and eye coordination, problem solving and never to be underestimated -- patience!

5.) Musical toys - Naturally, these musical toys are for the days that you do not already have a headache. It really depends on your child's likes/dislikes on whether or not you get a sing-a-long style book or a piano or a guitar. Even if we have no musical talent ourselves, music stimulates the mind and is a very strong contributor in the mental development of our toddlers.

Of course, these are just some education toys for toddlers. There are many more out there that are definitely worth our time. These, to me, are just a handful of the staples.

Can Children Learn Through Toys?

Toys are just for fun, right? Though it might seem like it on the surface, in fact it's not just "educational toys" - designed and marketed as such - that offer something for your child's development. Even though educational toys seem to represent a large part of the toy market, in fact many different types of toys aid in your child's development, even if they aren't marketed as "educational." Nearly every toy designed for a toddler has some sort of educational value, whether it's a puzzle, a set of wooden building blocks, or a pedal car. There are many toys out there that provide a source of learning in addition to hours of entertainment.

As a parent, you undoubtedly want your child to have the best start in life. Research consistently shows that a child's first five years are crucial to their development. As parents, we try our best to nurture children, providing them with the same values and experiences we remember from our own childhoods. That is why it is so important for parents to promote children's early developmental stages, not only with "educational toys" but also a varied play experience to enhance their imagination, coordination, and motor skills.

Many toys and games seem to incorporate fairly specific educational goals. Toys that encourage children to reason by solving simple problems or puzzles are one of the common varieties of educational toys. Other toys promote literacy by encouraging children to identify letters and words, colors or animals. Most games and toys take advantage of a child's natural curiosity and playfulness in order to combine learning with engaging activities.

Toys don't just have to promote the development of a child's mind, however, and they don't have to be strictly "educational toys" to aid in a child's development. Outdoor toys are a great way to encourage exercise, the growth of your child's imagination, and improved coordination. Soccer balls, swing sets, and ride-on toys are just a few of the ways you can encourage your child's muscular development and coordination.

The market for educational toys seems to grow more and more each year, as toy companies and child psychologists seek out new ways to optimize the learning of young children, but often it's the classic toys that are the best. Too often, battery-operated toys tell children exactly how to interact with them, leaving little room for imagination. On the other hand, the classics that you probably remember as a child - pedal cars, hula hoops, and wooden blocks, to name a few - inspire children to make up games and story lines, enhancing their imagination.

If you're a parent and want to purchase toys that will have a great educational value for your child or children, stick to the classics. Whether you want your child to learn letters, numbers, colors or animals, or work on their balance and coordination, there is no doubt a toy that will be the perfect fit. Toys can be both amazingly fun and incredibly educational, allowing you to easily take advantage of your child's natural curiosity to reinforce learning habits.

How Puzzles Aid Child Development

Solving puzzles is a great way for young children to develop important hand-eye coordination and motor skills. The most basic of puzzles are those which include shape sorting, whereby a child is required to manipulate various shaped blocks and place them in the appropriately shaped slot. These are suitable for children as young as one, and will help them develop very basic problem solving skills as well as hand-eye coordination.

Jigsaw puzzles are very popular among children. Jigsaws with increasing levels of difficulty are available for a wide range of ages and developmental stages. Jigsaw puzzles utilise a handful of specifically shaped pieces that fit into corresponding holes in a board. The number of pieces can range from as few as four up to a thousand. Often with puzzles for younger children, the jigsaw pieces are decorated so that when placed together correctly they form an entire picture. Completing these simple puzzles not only aids hand-eye coordination but also will help develop a child's memory. Jigsaws designed for older children may include letters and numbers to help familiarise them with the alphabet and learn basic numeric skills.

Other puzzles designed for children rely on the matching of shapes and colours. These will again aid hand-eye coordination, but will also encourage your child to distinguish between different shapes and colours. These are basic problem solving skills, but are essential for them to develop and ready themselves for bigger challenges.

Puzzles are an invaluable aide for skill development. However, it is important to introduce children to those that are suitable for their age group. Young children in particular can get very frustrated with puzzles that they cannot solve. Often this is simply because they haven't yet developed the necessary hand-eye coordination or thought processes required to complete them.

Introducing puzzles to children at a young age is an enjoyable way for them to develop important manual dexterity, memory, and coordination skills. As they get older, they will be able to advance to more complicated puzzles promoting development of language and numeric skills. It is important to help your child with puzzles initially. As they become more comfortable with the idea of puzzles, they will be able to complete them on their own, providing a rewarding experience for both you and your child.

Educational Benefits Of Children's Puzzles

Puzzles are a traditional favourite children's educational toy among not just kids, put parents and teachers.

You can improve your child's early learning both at home and at school by giving them puzzle toys to play with.

Children's puzzles help to develop a whole range of skills, including cognitive skills, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and even social skills.

Puzzles improve cognitive - reasoning and problem-solving - skills by helping children to see the relationship between the whole and its parts.

They can also enhance visual spacial awareness and teach subjects such as the alphabet, counting, colours, shapes and sorting objects into sets like animals or vehicles.

Motor skills such as grasping and manipulation (not the monetary or emotional kind) are developed through puzzles such as jigsaws, or those which require the child to put pegs or blocks in holes or attach one object to another. These skills are crucial for writing and drawing, but children begin learning them long before they ever pick up a crayon.

Similarly, babies and toddlers learn hand-eye coordination skills as they pick up pieces of a puzzle and place them in their right place.

Playing with puzzles can also teach your children social skills when done with other children. Children learn share tasks and cooperate as they swap pieces of the puzzle and discuss where they should go. They can also learn how to cope with frustration when they cannot make a piece fit.

In short, puzzles are fun, stimulating, educational toys for children and adults of all ages.

Finding Preschool Educational Toys For Your Child

Preschool educational toys can be as simple as blocks, puzzles, memory games, and plastic food. They can also be more involved with the newest technology where you child sits down to watch videos and follow along with books. The choice is yours. Below we will be looking at how a few of these Preschool Educational Toys can be helpful in getting your child ready for school.

Blocks are perhaps the simplest Preschool Educational Toys you can have. Blocks help build the child's mind from discerning shapes to figuring out how to build something. While blocks are simple, they allow your child to develop the fine motor skills it takes to stack and stack without collapsing. They also enable your child to use imagination and start a project and finish it. This is also true of puzzles and the memory game. With puzzles, even the most simple, enables your preschooler to visualize the piece and how it will fit within the rest of the shapes. They also get the joy of seeing the picture complete. You will be amazed how many times they will do puzzles over and over again. Memory games allow the child to see the pictures and match them up with the corresponding piece.

The newest technology for Preschool Educational Toys involves children's laptops as well as videos to watch. These can be helpful as your child gets older, but there is nothing like playing. Arts and crafts seem like a messy waste of time, but it can be huge in watching your child grow and develop. By all means get some LeapFrog Videos and even some Baby Einstein but make sure you don't let those take the place of play.

Unplugged Fun - Non-Electronic Educational Games For Kids

Games have always been one of the most engaging and reliable ways to teach kids new skills and reinforce them so they are not forgotten. Kids naturally want to play games so if they are able to learn something at the same time it can be beneficial on a number of levels.

In modern society the word "games" has become synonymous with computer games. And while computer games may have their strengths, they are not the only type of games to engage and educate.

Board games, logic puzzles and educational toys are designed to get kid's minds working. These games also work a different art of the mind than computer games and can help with spatial development and dexterity. For babies the learning company Lamaze introduces educational toys for the youngest baby. Straight from birth their range of soft and colourful toys draws the interest of babies and starts to develop their sense of hearing, sight and touch.

As children of this age do not see very well, sound is emphasised and the different auditory responses generated by the toys can then begin developing awareness, concentration and cause and effect. Their toys cater for children from 0-2 years. Toys in the later years emphasise motor movements and hand eye co-ordination.

For older children, the award winning range from Thinkfun provides a great range of logic based toys that are designed to engage the brain, increase concentration and problem solving skills. These games are commonly known as brainteaser puzzles and, like electronic games, can be played by one person. As with all brain teaser games, creative thinking is required - these are not mere distractions or time-passers.

Their games are simple, self contained and ingenious. In Rush Hour, a popular example, a player must move their car game-piece around a small board packed with other vehicles and maneuver themselves from one side of the town board to the other. The player can set their own challenge level and, as they become more competent, the game can become accordingly more difficult.

If you are thinking of a way to engage your child beyond a flickering screen then you could also consider jigsaw puzzles (try a puzzle with a picture of your child's favourite character) or sandbox playsets, mosaic creation kits, puppet theaters and many more games that are designed to enhance your child's creativity and having something on hand before you "unplug" your child is recommended.

Give Your Toddler Toys For Emotional Development

Experts enumerate physical, motor, cognitive and emotional growth as key areas in child development. Of these four, most people would actively seek out ways to help their growing baby in achieving the first three. Parents' primary concerns would usually include finding the right balance of nutrients and exercise to strengthen their babies' bodies and to help them navigate their way through the world of big things around them. In a typical toy store, there would be the usual slew of colorful blocks and puzzles for a toddler, toys which stimulate mental growth. A father would aspire for his son to be a sports star; a mother would love the idea of her child becoming a doctor someday.

While not consciously overlooked, the last key area is one which is the most easily taken for granted. Emotional growth is, after all, something that a child can not learn from just his toys. Though a child could learn to "love" his toys, a stuffed animal could not, in reality, hug him back; a doll can not teach him to be considerate of other people's feelings. Toys are tools which could help, but the actual lesson would come from the parents.

It is a common enough scenario to have a mother keep herself in the background while her child is preoccupied with playing, while she herself is busy with other activities. However, she would not only be missing out on developing a loving bond between herself and her child, but she would also deprive him of the chance to become better adjusted socially. Parents are, after all, the first "friends" a child could have. While genetics play an important role in determining a child's personality, actual interaction would allow him to learn faster and better.

The first few years of a child's life is a crucial period in which the mind is best prepared to learn fundamental skills. This is also the time when a child develops emotional bonds to the people around him. These two in conjunction sets the perfect stage for learning emotional and social skills. Parents could give their toddler toys such as dolls and stuffed animals, but the most vital thing would be to consistently set loving and responsible examples. Play-acting would be a stimulating and creative activity, with characters, dialogue and situations mirroring the actual world.

Something as simple as a pair of sock puppets could demonstrate to your child such abstract ideas as empathy and respect. Even in playing with toys such as blocks and puzzles, a child would become more confident with himself if given praise for hard work and accomplishment. A story from a book becomes much more interesting to a child when it is being read in his father's loving voice.

It is a fact that a child who is loved is a child who is happy. It has also been said that the home is the schoolhouse from which a child may learn his first, if not the most important lessons he would need in his life. And what lesson is more important than that of love and respect for fellow human beings? Parents, love your child not just by giving your toddler toys, but by playing with him.

Shop Smart When Buying Children's Toys

In this article we are going to take a look at the importance of choosing the right toys that will not only bring hours of fun, but will also help with child development as well. Toys are a kids best friend, have you ever known a kid that didn't like toys? Children's toys have been around as long as kids have and they range from the very basic ball or doll to today's more complicated modern toys such as multi dimensional play cubes offering many activities all in one toy to building blocks, puzzles, painting easels and others. As we go forward, we will explore the differences in certain toys and look at the benefits they can bring to your children.

First and most important, the toys we pick for our children should be fun and safe. A lot of toys today are fun but maybe not so safe and that's a problem. We also should be concerned with the practical use of the toys our kids play with. Educational toys or toys that bring out the creativity in a child are the most positive tools for a young child's growth and development. Educational toys are fun too, they offer endless ways to play and develop good motor skills, thinking ability and imagination.

The age of the child usually determines what types of educational toys they will play with. Children up to three years plus, are learning everything for the first time, developing coordination, analytical thinking and creativity. This means that the toys they play with should have many brilliant colors to stimulate their senses along with hand-eye coordination activities, counting exercises and anything else that motivates the child to learn the basics of life. There are many different types of quality learning toys to choose from which are suitable for all children. When looking for toys to buy for your kids, always take into account your child's special and unique likes and dislikes. Maybe they are an expiring artist and could use a terrific art easel or art activity desk. Perhaps you have a little genius in the family and they would be more suited to play with counting toys such as a children's abacus or a busy play cube with mazes and number counting play. Most importantly, the toys your children play with should be fun as well as educational.

It is a proven fact that almost all children love music, from the old classic nursery rhymes to modern and classical music. Most adults can remember as a child taking some kind of music lessons, most likely, piano lessons. A great way for kids to get started in their musical adventures is to buy them, children size instruments such as toy drums, guitars, flutes and so on. A toy piano is something that any child would love to play and there is a very good company by the name of Schoenhut, they have been in the business of manufacturing toy pianos for over a hundred years. These pianos are much more than just a toy, they are real musical instruments. If your child is in the toddler stage, the "my first piano" is just right for their little fingers. For older children, there is a large selection of styles such as the classic baby grand, traditional spinet or even a daycare durable model to choose from. These high quality children's pianos range in price from around fifty dollars all the way up to about eight hundred. Regardless what piano you decide is right for your child, you will have an air loom to pass down from generation to generation.

For those children that love to draw, and most kids do, consider looking into an investment in some art supplies made just for kids. Child size art easels come in many different styles, from the most basic design to more complete styles with different accessories for the serious artist. A great piece of art equipment is an art desk or art activity center. These are designed for children and offer a wide range of activities they can perform from sitting at the desk or table and sketching out their new master piece to painting, sculpting with clay or whatever else they can dream up. Whether you need school durability art easels and desks or just enough art equipment for a kids home studio, you will be able to find what you are looking for and your children will thank you.

We have really just scratched the surface of all the great learning toys that are out there for our children to play with and parents should take time to know their child's interests when deciding what toys to buy. Remember, the best toys aren't necessarily the new fad, but the simple classics that are not only fun to play with but are educational as well. If you would like to learn more about educational children's toys and art supplies, you can visit our site for a wide selection of great toys and information.

Learning Toys Let Your Kids Have Fun While They Learn

Today you are fortunate to gift your children with educational toys which help them to have fun and at the same time learn a lot. The toys are aimed towards the development of a young child's creativity skills and metal abilities. Certain toys also help in the physical development of children; you can sum it up by saying that learning toys enhance the all round development of a young child.

There are learning toys designed for all ages. The toys for an infant will be different from that of a toddler's or a teenager's. When you are shopping for learning toys, try to analyze what your child will achieve from playing with the stuff. Good learning toys are made from non-toxic elements, do not have sharp edges that can hurt a child, and are also brightly colored. The child should be interested to play with a learning toy, only then will the target be achieved.

Learning toys need not be expensive; look for the appropriate toys at the stores. The best place for finding educational toys is online. You can have simple stacking toys, like building blocks for putting the mental ability of the children to test. With building blocks, kids can differentiate among the different sizes, shapes and colors of the blocks. Jigsaw puzzles and word puzzles help increase the mental ability and the vocabulary of your children.

Painting and drawing sets help a child be more creative. A child can express herself or himself better with art supplies, such as crayons, markers, safety scissors and heavy construction paper. Learning toys can be simple and great tools for education.

For youngsters, you can also have video games. Remember, it is best to avoid gifting video games which do not help in the development of a child. Refrain from gifting video or electronic games to babies.

Why look online for educational toys?

The point of looking online for educational toys is that reputed online stores have toys categorized according to the ages of children. A reputed site will have the different toys displayed; all you have to do is go through them and select the one you want for your baby or youngster.

The prices are also mentioned for each toy. This is good as it will help you make a buy within your budget. Also find out about the shipping policies and the process of delivery of the online store that you have selected. Research learning toys well online and make a smart buy.

Nurturing Intelligence - The Role of Games, Toys and Puzzles in Development

I have always treated and considered puzzles from an educational standpoint, for the reason that they constitute a species of mental gymnastics which sharpen the wits and train the mind to reason along straight lines. Puzzles are a school for cleverness and ingenuity.

-Sam Lloyd (1841-1911)

The above quote by one of the world's greatest puzzle masters, written much before the emergence of the fields of cognitive psychology and neurology, sheds light on what is now being confirmed by advanced tools and research in the realms of cognitive development.

Studies have confirmed that the interaction with stimulating learning games along with objects to explore, increases the number of branches on the nerve cells in the brain and can promote better learning

[1]. Furthermore, a team led by Torkel Klingberg at the Karolinska Institute, part of the Stockholm Brain Institute, has found signs that the neural systems that underlie working memory (a cognitive function related to general intelligence) may grow in response to training

[2]. Regarding the neural basis for development and plasticity of cognitive functions during childhood, in particular the development of attention and working memory, this information shows that correct training and educational exposure can yield sustained attention, better impulse control and improved learning ability, as well as correct critical learning deficits

[3]. Historically, a person's IQ - a measure of all kinds of mental problem-solving abilities, including spatial skills, memory and verbal reasoning - was thought to be fixed by nature - locked into a person's genes. However, Dr. Beth Lucy Wellman (1895-1952), a professor of child psychology at the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station was instrumental in advancing her findings that a child's IQ and scholastic performance depend on the quality of intellectual stimulation and social environment

[4]. Leading the way for the type of research currently being conducted as to what type of nurture will provide the best medium to develop a child's abilities. What, in particular, compose the "positive, nurturing environments that encourage interaction and response - the conditions for developing the more complex neural networks that appear to be the 'hardware' of intelligence"

[5]. Many psychologists and researchers have come to a decidedly intuitive and simple conclusion, one that hearkens back to the words of Sam Lloyd: Child's play - Fostering children at play through enriching games, puzzles and activities - and in doing so, nurturing major cognitive functions and crucial developmental stages. Children who are furnished with construction toys, such as wooden cubes and geometric puzzles develop visual-spatial abilities that are related to math and science achievement.

[6]. These types of toys can stimulate visual/spatial thinking and problem solving, demonstrating skills vital to "future engineers, architects, pilots, mathematicians, scientists, computer programmers or technicians, entrepreneurs, artists musicians, mechanics, human relations professionals, or spiritual leaders"

[7]. Furthermore, the skills developed through the interaction with tangible 3-D toys and geometrical puzzles that stimulate visual spatial learning are reinforced through haptic perception - the tactile perception through the skin and kinesthetic perception of the position and movement of the joints and muscles, a developmentally important experience lacking in computerized models and games. The development of executive function, the activity of the brain that is responsible for the ability to manage organization, priority-setting, time management, and decision making is dependent on the high order processes of elective attention, behavioral planning and response inhibition, as well as the manipulation of information in problem-solving tasks.

[8]. It is crucial for children as they mature into young adults and its function in self-regulation is incredibly important. Poor executive function is associated with high dropout rates, drug use and crime, whereas good executive function is a better predictor of success in school than a child's IQ, as well as effective development in almost every domain.

[9]. Children develop executive functions through "learning to be organized, using a routine, purposeful scenarios for problem solving and higher order thinking"

[10]. These are all features of many simple wooden toys and brainteasers. Unfortunately, many of today's games and toys are overly structured, goal-oriented, and push the child to follow predetermined scripts, whether through guided computer activity, or by actively directing the play of the child through talking, lights, buttons and levers. To counteract this, in addition to giving the child "unstructured" play time, toys that don't command the child, but rather leave the child in command, can be very useful. Professor Hirsh-Pasek, of Temple University, Philadelphia, recommends searching the "least traveled aisles" in toyshops to parents who "really want to prepare their children for life in next generation"

[11]. Traditional wooden toys make a pleasing change from the noisy, flashing plastic equivalents that fill the shelves of toyshops today. It has also been shown that toys and puzzles with distinct, ordered solutions that require time, patience and planning to solve yield added benefits to the learning process within the exciting moment of recognition in which the correct solution is achieved. The authors of a review on Engineering Education at Indiana University posit this "ah-ha!" moment as an "important cognitive event" of the learning process. Specifically it "enhances performance in creative problem solving and creative design, and it can play a role in transforming learning from an activity of drudgery to one of enjoyment.

[12]. The search for a solution to challenging puzzles produces such "ah-ha!" moments, which in turn can lead to the development of students who will find learning exciting later in life. On the macro level, toys, games and child's play crucial to neural and cognitive development also have specific functions within particular stages of childhood. Using the Constructivist Theory of child development, advanced by Jean Piaget, many psychologists have advised parents and educators to structure the physical environment of children so that learning and development occur naturally, and in appropriate stages, through the interaction with the environment and people around them.
Again, appropriate materials are necessary to this structuring, including toys and games that stimulate interaction. Various Mind Twisters, Brain Teasers, and Geometric Riddles and Puzzles are essential to give children and students a chance to manipulate objects and test out ideas and hypothesis as they progress to Middle Childhood.

[13] board games and others with specific rules have been shown to enhance discrete skills as well as cooperation, understanding and logical thinking. For example, researchers working at the National Association for the Education of Young Children in Washington, D.C recently found a correlation between math achievement and students' exposure to board games at home.

[14]. Furthermore, in today's high tech world, it is interesting to note that when it comes to games, toys and puzzles, the more traditional, simple, tactile, loosely structured, visual/spatial offerings can make a very significant contribution to a child's intelligence and developmental well-being. Thus, it is not a surprise that Sam Lloyd, speaking 100 years ago, is still relevant to the discussion of education and the development of intelligence today.

The Benefits of Puzzles For Toddlers

When it comes to toys for toddlers, one of the best toys you can get is a puzzle. Allowing children to play with puzzles at an early age can greatly aid in their childhood education and help them develop skills that they can use later in their lives. Let's take a look at some of the benefits of puzzles for toddlers and see how they can help them to develop and grow both mentally and physically.

Puzzles Improve Motor Skills

Young children need to learn to grasp and hold objects. Puzzles can be a great way to develop and improve motor skills since they require a toddler to hold and manipulate a relatively small object. Try a peg or block puzzle which both have pieces a child will need to grab and hold on to in order to complete the picture or game.

They Improve Cognitive Skills

A toddler can improve their cognitive skills - in particular their problem solving and reasoning skills - with puzzles. They can help to teach color and shape recognition, to get a better understanding of the relationship of a part to the whole and can even teach them things like letters, numbers, animal names and more depending upon the theme.

They Improve Hand-Eye Coordination

Puzzles require a child to place an object in a precise location. To fit the piece they usually must manipulate it, try it out, move it around and finally fit it in its place. This is a great way to develop hand-eye coordination and to improve their skills as they master fitting pieces where they should go.

Types of Puzzles for Toddlers

There are a wide variety of puzzles for toddlers on the market today. Some of the most popular are block puzzles (which usually feature a single picture printed on wooden blocks), foam puzzles, plush puzzles made of fleece or fabric, games that require fitting a shape into a hole and many other styles.

Obviously, their visual skills are used here. Imagination definitely will come in once they play it.

Their intellectual ability is practiced. Motor skills are also enhanced with this toy. With physical contact, using eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, they know how these ride on toys can be maneuvered. They learn how to manipulate it and eventually became "masters" of it. Their large motor skills are also developed by body coordination and balance.

Their mathematical skills are also challenged by solving problem. If one day, their toy won't work, they will know how to make it work again. It can be due to the battery or a part of it that's causing the problem. Again, their ability to categorize and construct the possible solutions will enable them to solve it.

Cooperative and linguistic skills are the skills that will be developed once they are able to play with other kids. They will learn on how to mingle with their playmates. They will have a chance to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings. They will learn to listen to other kids' ideas and suggestions. Here is when your child cooperates with their play mate in reaching their goal when they play "pretend". This skill is best developed when you allow them to mingle with other kids on parks or playgrounds.

Lastly, in developing their independent skills, with their ride on toys, they will learn to decide on their own. They will learn on how things really work.

So when you have second thoughts of getting your kids ride on toys because you think it will not help them grow, now you can stop thinking twice...these toys will definitely help your kids in improving in many ways.
